It would make a fine addition to your collection, especially if you manage to unite it with an original Luftwaffe ‘Theurmann’ drop-down holster. A genuine Luftwaffe issue PPK is extremely hard to find, especially in this condition. It retains nearly all its original high polish blued finish. The pistol is in its original condition, with matching-numbered frame, slide and magazine floorplate. The fine Luftwaffe PPK that we are offering today comes from a well-known German collection, which was carefully accumulated over the course of almost seventy-five years. One must observe the font of the numbers very closely! There have been attempts to make regular military PPK pistols to appear to be Luftwaffe by stamping a matching number on a blank magazine floorplate.

The distinguishing features of a Luftwaffe PPK are, firstly the serial number range, as explained in the previous paragraph, and secondly, if the pistol is accompanied by its original magazine(s), the floorplate would be stamped with the same serial number in the same font as that on the pistol. Only the Krieghoff-made P08 Lugers had Luftwaffe acceptance stamps. If you come across one that does, then it is a fake marking on a regular commercial pistol. None of the Luftwaffe’s PPK pistols, or any of the other ‘7.65 pistols’, bore any Luftwaffe acceptance stamp.

What distinguishes a Luftwaffe PPK from one issued to the Heer and how can we tell fakes apart? The Luftwaffe’s pistols bore the same Waffenamt stamp as the Army’s. These were mainly issued to aircrew, which would account for their rarity today considering the high losses. We estimate that the number of PPK pistols procured by the Luftwaffe is around 3,000 pieces. The latter is just 34 numbers away from the one we are offering.

The lowest and highest serial numbers of the genuine Luftwaffe PPKs which we have examined are 300887 K and 303272 K. The pistols delivered would have been in a higher serial number range. What we do know as a fact is that the Luftwaffe received its first PPK for evaluation purposes in October 1941 and its serial number was 270240 K. German archives reveal that the Luftwaffe received a total of 55,000 ‘7.65mm pistols’, which figure includes Walther PP and PPK, Mauser 1934 and HSc and Sauer 38H. These figures include PPK pistols issued to the Luftwaffe, which received just a small percentage of those accepted by the Waffenamt. The colour of the grips started changing in the third variation, as they went from brown to grey and finally black. The first two variations had a high polish blued finish, whereas the third one had a rough military blued finish.

To the best of our knowledge, all the examples shown are original pre-1945 manufacture. The P38 was a further development by the Walther firm to produce a 9mm pistol for the military to replace the Luger. Additional proof and issue marks can be found on most models which increase their rarity. These 9 models illustrate the eveloution of Walther pistol design which culminated in the Walther PP (Polizeipistole) introduced in 1929 and the Walther PPK(Polizeipistole Kriminalmodell) introduced in 1931. When the Model 2 was released in 1914, this pistol became known as the Model 1. In 1910, Walther introduced the "Deutche Selbstlade Pistole Walther" in 6.35mm.
